Shelley Kester: Building a More Empowered Approach to Family Law in Michigan

For Shelley Kester, family law has never been just about legal filings, court hearings, or case outcomes. It is about helping people find their footing during one of the most difficult transitions of their lives.

As Founder and CEO of Wilson Kester, Shelley has built a Michigan-based family law firm around a clear purpose: empowering clients with the knowledge, support, and strategic advocacy they need to move forward with strength. That purpose is reflected in the firm’s identity as The Empowered Divorce Source—and in the experience Shelley strives to create for every client who walks through the door.

Shelley’s path to family law began after law school, when she started her career at a large California firm handling insurance and business litigation. The work gave her a strong foundation in discovery, civil procedure, and litigation strategy. But while it was valuable experience, it did not spark the same sense of purpose she would later find in family law.

After returning home to Michigan, Shelley had the opportunity to work on a family law matter involving a client who was deeply afraid of her spouse. The client was experiencing domestic violence and came to the legal process feeling frightened, isolated, and unsure of what would happen next.

Shelley immersed herself in the work. She learned the law, pursued a personal protection order, sought a psychological evaluation, and helped present the client’s story to the court. As the case progressed, Shelley saw firsthand how thoughtful legal advocacy could change a person’s life.

The client’s transformation stayed with her. She went from being visibly afraid and uncertain to standing taller, feeling heard, and gaining confidence in her future. For Shelley, that experience made the value of family law unmistakable.

“It was a true transformation of empowerment,” Shelley says. “Somebody believed her, and she was able to stand up for herself.”

That moment became a defining point in Shelley’s career. She committed herself to becoming the kind of attorney she would want beside her if the stakes involved her own family or children: prepared, strategic, compassionate, and relentless about the facts.

Over the years, Shelley has continued to invest deeply in her legal education and professional development. She has studied litigation, negotiation, family law processes, and the role that communication plays in helping clients navigate high-stakes decisions. Her approach recognizes that family law clients are not simply looking for someone to handle paperwork. They want to understand what is happening, why it matters, and how they can make informed decisions about their next chapter.

That commitment to education is central to the Wilson Kester experience. Divorce, custody disputes, parenting-time concerns, and other family law matters can feel overwhelming because the rules, terminology, and process are unfamiliar. Wilson Kester works to help clients understand both the legal framework and the practical steps ahead, so they can participate meaningfully in their own case.

For Shelley, empowerment also means ensuring that clients feel seen.

“Clients want to be heard,” she explains. “They want to be understood, and they want their story told.”

At Wilson Kester, that philosophy extends beyond the attorney-client relationship. The firm’s legal teams, paralegals, and staff work collaboratively to provide clients with both high-level legal service and a supportive experience. Through secure tools, ongoing communication, and intentional education, the firm aims to help clients feel grounded rather than left in the dark.

Shelley’s vision has also shaped the firm’s growth. What began as a small team has grown into a larger Michigan family law practice with a presence in Northern Michigan, Grand Rapids, and Southeast Michigan. The firm focuses exclusively on family law, including divorce, child custody, parenting time, adoption, and related matters. Its growth was recently recognized when Wilson Kester was named No. 29 on Inc.’s 2026 list of the fastest-growing private companies in the Midwest.

For Shelley, growth is meaningful because it creates the opportunity to serve more families and invest in more communities. She is particularly committed to supporting efforts related to domestic violence and child abuse prevention, including partnerships with organizations such as the Women’s Resource Center and the Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center.

Her leadership is also rooted in creating opportunity for women in the legal profession. Early in her career, Shelley saw few women in leadership roles at law firms. That experience helped shape a bold vision: to build a statewide family law firm led by women and designed around a more human, client-centered model of advocacy.

Today, Wilson Kester’s team includes women in leadership and legal roles, while remaining committed to building a strong, collaborative team of professionals who share the firm’s mission. Shelley also remains active with the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, supporting the advancement and visibility of women throughout the profession.

At the heart of Shelley Kester’s work is a belief in possibility. She wants clients to see more than the uncertainty in front of them. She wants them to see a future they can build.

Whether a client is navigating divorce, custody, or another difficult family transition, Wilson Kester’s mission is to help them move forward with clarity, confidence, and purpose.
